The One Thing AI Can’t Do For Your Student
Every teacher has spent the last two years asking themself some version of the same question: how can I be sure that this is my student’s work?
It's a real problem and it doesn't have a clean answer. Essays can be generated. Research summaries can be generated. Reading responses, lab write-ups, discussion posts… most written assignments could have been generated, and often well enough to pass. Schools have tried detection software, in-class handwriting, oral defenses, and honor codes, and none of it has settled the question.
The World Economic Forum ran a piece this spring arguing that schools talk constantly about teaching critical thinking without ever specifying how. An Inside Higher Ed essay in June went further: We Have Never Taught Critical Thinking. The debate is genuinely unresolved.
But here's what's strange about it from where we sit: There's this activity, that is centuries old, and is impossible to compete in without developing critical thinking skills.
You cannot fake a round.
Put a student in a debate round and something happens that no assignment can replicate. They have prepared a case. Their opponent says something they did not anticipate. And now there are six minutes, a judge watching, and no place to look it up.
What comes out of the student's mouth in that moment is theirs. And we know this not because we've built a clever detection system, but because the format makes it structurally impossible for it to be anyone else's. They either understand the argument well enough to respond to it, or everyone in the room finds out they don't.
The same is true of a speech. A student can have help writing a piece, but they cannot have help delivering it. They stand up, they perform, and the judge is watching whether the person speaking actually understands what they're saying, responds to the room’s input, and is capable of developing a story.
When they’re starting out, the student quickly learns that they are on their own. If they make a bad argument, it is theirs to own and defend throughout the round. If they fail to develop differences between characters in an interp piece, the audience (and potentially the performer) is lost for the rest of the scene.
This human imperfection isn't a new virtue that speech and debate acquired when AI showed up. It's what the activity has always been. It just happens to be the thing school is currently scrambling to rebuild - bumpy learning that allows the competitor to grow slowly, like a muscle.
The research is unusually strong
Researchers Beth Schueler and Katherine Larned tracked 3,515 debate participants in Boston Public Schools across ten years of data. Their study, now published in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, does something most education research can't: it compares students to themselves, across the years they participated and the years they didn't. That design handles the obvious objection — that debate just attracts students who were already strong.
What they found:
English Language Arts scores rose 0.13 standard deviations: roughly 68% of a full year of average 9th-grade learning
Graduation rates rose 12 percentage points. College enrollment rose 12 percentage points
The gains were largest for the students who were struggling most before they started. The bottom quartile gained nearly twice what the top quartile did
Per dollar, debate produced about twice the academic impact of high-dosage tutoring
And the detail that matters most for the argument here: the reading gains concentrated in analytical reading (following an argument, evaluating a claim) rather than in basic language conventions. Debate didn't teach students more grammar. It taught them to think about what they were reading.
That is precisely the skill everyone is now worried students are outsourcing.
The finding isn't a Boston fluke, either. A separate study in the Houston Independent School District found the same relationship between debate participation and academic achievement in a completely different district.
What this means if you're a coach or a parent
If you're a coach, you already know all of this. You've watched a quiet ninth-grader turn into someone who will argue with an adult, in public, with evidence. You don't need a study to tell you it worked.
What the research gives you is a way to say it to someone who controls a budget. "It builds confidence" is true and gets nodded at. "Twelve percentage points on college enrollment, largest gains for our lowest-performing students, and about twice the impact per dollar of tutoring" is a different conversation with a principal.
If you're a parent, the version worth holding onto is smaller. The value isn't the trophy. It's that your student spends several Saturdays a year in a situation where the thinking has to be theirs… and where they find out, in a low-stakes way, what happens when they haven't done the reading. Giving students a safe place to fail is essential to building the grit necessary to succeed in the long term.
The part where we mention what we do
We run tournaments online. About twenty a season (September-June), half live and half asynchronous, for elementary through college students.
We're not going to claim online is better than sitting in a school gym at 7am with your team. It isn't, and any coach who's done both knows it. What it is, is reachable. Most schools in this country don't have a speech and debate program, and the reason usually isn't that nobody wants one, but instead that the nearest tournament is four hours away, the bus costs money the activities budget doesn't have, and no teacher has a free weekend to chaperone. That's the barrier we exist to remove. It's why a lot of our teams are rural schools and homeschool co-ops that had no realistic path into the activity at all.
Every entry gets written feedback from a judge. Every student gets guaranteed rounds. Travel costs nothing, because there's no travel.
